History of Teknik Kimia UI

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Indonesia (UI sec) is one of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia. Currently, UI sec education programs provide education for S1 (Regular, Extension, and International Class), S2, and S3. In the journey so far, sec UI has undergone many changes and improvements in order to produce quality graduates who fit the demands of the times. Several important changes along the way momentum UI sec is:

1. The establishment of Department of Chemical Engineering (TGP), University of Indonesia (1985)

The establishment of the Department of Chemical Engineering originated from Gas Engineering Study Program (PSTG) who was born in 1981 in the Department of Metallurgy at the request of PERTAMINA regarding national needs will be engineering graduates capable and prepared to handle natural gas liquefaction process. PSTG students come from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering (University of Indonesia), and Department of Physics and Chemistry (Science Faculty UI). In the same year of birth also in Chemical Engineering Study Program (PSTK) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

There is the same at the core engineering courses and activities at both the course, then tercetuslah plans to open a new department that meggabungkan second study program. In 1985, PSTG and PSTK merged into the Department of Gas and Petrochemicals (TGP) and began to accept students from the first half through a national selection was named Sipenmaru (Selection of New Student acceptance).

Initially, the University of Indonesia TGP academic subjects designed to meet the urgent need for engineers who are capable of handling the processing and management of natural gas (in the upstream) and the petrochemical industry (in the section between). With the growing need for engineers who are competent in handling the chemical industry or other industries throughout Indonesia, TGP University of Indonesia has shown its capacity to develop themselves and adapt the core of Chemical Engineering Education Programs in their entirety.

2. Changes in the Chemical Engineering Study Program (1996)

Initially, the Department of Chemical Engineering (TGP), University of Indonesia are categorized into groups of Study Program of Chemical Engineering (PSTGP) under Directorate General of Higher SK 1989. Over time, the Directorate General of Higher Education RI Department of Education and Culture (DG Directorate - Department of education) was officially established as the University of Indonesia TGP Department of Chemical Engineering Study Program or PSTK UI in 1996. Since then, participation and involvement of the TGP in the world of Chemical Engineering University of Indonesia in Indonesia has become a clear and significant.

In the year 2003, based on Household Rules (ART) UI BHMN, each department within the UI changes to the department. Thus Programs TGP was changed to the Department of Chemical Engineering University of Indonesia with Chemical Engineering study program.

3. Changes to the UI sec (2006)

The presence of TGP Department University of Indonesia on the one side is advantageous because it is the only department or departments in the university that exists in Indonesia. In addition, the specificity is carried by the name of the department reflects the specialization of science who taught at the University of Indonesia Department of TGP. On the other hand, there are some losses suffered by the Department of TGP, among others, the lack of benchmarks or comparators both at national and international levels. Beside that, given the existing studies program at the Department of TGP is a chemical engineering course tercetuslah desire to turn into the Department of Chemical Engineering. This desire is, not apart from the advice and input of several alumni who feel the TGP faced several obstacles when entering some areas of employment. And since July 31, 2006, according to Rector, University of Indonesia, Department of Chemical Engineering resm changed to the Department of Chemical Engineering.

4. Opening of Bioprocess Technology Studies Program (2008)

Development of science and technology at the global level can not be separated from the monitoring and observation of the academic community in the sec-UI, one of which is the field of Bioprocess Technology. Bioprocess Technology is one field that is closely related to chemical engineering. At the global level, this bioprocess technology has long been a serious concern, especially in developed countries like USA, Japan, Singapore and even Malaysia. Seriousness is demonstrated by opening a department or departments, faculties and even special schools bioprocess technology field.

But at the national level, this has not become a serious concern. Seeing this, sec, University of Indonesia UI encourages parties who have a vision Toward Research University to open new courses at the UI sec Bioprocess Studies Program. It is very possible considering sec UI have sufficient capacity in opening new courses, such as UI sec network with institutions related to bioprocess and many professors and experts who mastered the field of bioprocess. In addition, the environment has long existed sec UI bioprocess research group, so it is possible to facilitate the formation of Bioprocess Technology Studies Program.

With the above reasons and a strong willingness from the University of Indonesia sec, exit Rector University of Indonesia in 2008, which states the opening of new courses at the University of Indonesia sec Bioprocess Technology Studies Program (PSTB). Thus, until the year 2008, sec UI already has two Study Program is carried out, namely Chemical Engineering Study Program (PSTK) which is chaired by Prof.Dr.Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA and Bioprocess Technology Studies Program (PSTB) which is chaired by the Central Library Heri Purnomo, MEng.

Chronologically the development of sec-University of Indonesia can be shown in Figure
